College of New Rochelle Creates Internship Model With Ossining Schools

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The College of New Rochelle (CNR) has created a teaching internship model in partnership with the Mamaroneck and Ossining school districts that offers student teachers enrolled in the college’s teacher education programs compensation for real experience.

School districts gain handpicked educators who can provide flexible support to their staff and students. Four students are set to begin at Ossining in February, and interviews are in the works in Mamaroneck.

Candace Barriteau Phaire, chair of the education division at The College of New Rochelle, began developing this model after a meeting this fall with CNR alumna Carol Priore, now director of personnel for Mamaroneck District Schools.

“We are very excited to be partnering with The College of New Rochelle on this model. which will offer a positive experience for students and teachers,” noted Priore. “The opportunity to earn financial benefits and gain valuable teaching guidance is a huge advantage the partnerships offer to CNR students," explained Phaire. "It is so important to have as many field work hours as possible for teachers just starting out in the field. Experience provides opportunities for professional growth, background for videotaped accreditation requirements, and sets graduates apart from other candidates when seeking employment.”

Teaching interns are “adopted” by one school building in the district they work for, enabling the interns to connect more effectively as teaching assistants or substitutes through their relationships with experienced teachers. The schools have the benefit of developing a potential teaching pool to hire from as needed, and the interns benefit from the schools’ interest in grooming them through shadowing, observing, assisting, and substituting.

Mamaroneck intends to set up monthly workshops for their interns as well. Student interns are generally seniors in the undergraduate teacher education program at the College’s School of Arts and Sciences or CNR graduate students who have completed at least half their credits.

Students seeking to apply attend district presentations to learn specifics, participate in pre-screening interviews, and then work with Phaire who coordinates the application and interviewing process.
